Magdalenenkapelle
Rothenthurn
On a rocky outcrop above the Drau valley to the east of the village of Baldersdorf, the Magdalen Chapel of Baldersdorf can be seen from afar.
The chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1410, but according to archaeological investigations the church is much older. During excavations, a small round church with a rock grave was found, presumably the grave of the church founder. In 1513 the church was completed in its present form and is now a branch church of Molzbichl.
Every Easter Monday, the people of Molzbichl make a pilgrimage to the chapel to celebrate Holy Mass outdoors in front of the church with the male choral society.
The church is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, patron saint of women and sinners. Stations of her life are depicted inside the church.
In the immediate vicinity of the chapel is the Carantana Museum with its important early medieval excavations.
